Surfboards are necessary equipment for the sport of surfing. This popular water sport involves riding waves toward the shore. A number of variations also exist, including wakeboarding, boogie boarding, and kite boarding.
Surfing arose several hundred years ago in Hawaii and the islands of Polynesia. Everyone loved to surf - men, women, royalty, and commoners. While colonization by European explorers hampered surfing during the 1800s - missionaries felt it an inappropriate pastime - it made a comeback during the early 1900s. This was due in part to magazine articles written by Jack London, author of Call of the Wild and White Fang. Surfing soon spread to California and Australia.

During the 1950s and 1960s, a unique surfer culture arose, complete with its own lingo, music, and the goal of catching the perfect waves. It was perpetrated by "beach movies" such as Gidget and musical groups such as The Beach Boys. Professional surfing soon arose. Others, termed "soul-surfers," utilized the sport as a means of communing with nature. A number of modern films, including the animated movie Surf's Up and the 1990s Nickelodeon animated series Rocket Power, attempt to capture the classic surfer vibe.
Early surfboards were heavy, constructed of solid wood. Today, they are much lighter, often made of fiberglass. Surfing now takes place "wherever waves break, from Norway to the Antarctic, from the Mediterranean Sea to Lake Michigan."

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Surfboard
1. Begin by outlining the surfboard. Use two long, curved lines, connected at a point at the top. This is called the nose of the surfboard. At the bottom, connect them at an inward-facing point, forming a "W" shape. This is called the tail of the surfboard.
2. Draw a short straight line from the surfboard's tip. Then, from it, draw a long curved line parallel to the outer edge of the board. The sides of the surfboard are known as the rails.
3. Use a rounded "W" shaped line to connect the long line to the surfboard's tail.
4. Draw a long straight line between the nose of the surfboard and the tail. This is known as the stringer.
5. Use a curved line to enclose an irregular curved shape beneath the board. This forms the fin. Fins are used to direct the board and control it.
6. Use a series of curved lines to draw a pattern on the deck or surface of the board. Draw a spiral line like a wave, and curved lines in a cloudlike pattern.
7. Continue the pattern on the opposite side of the surfboard. Use curved lines to draw a cloudlike pattern.
8. Use curved lines to enclose another irregular shape near the nose of the surfboard.
9. Draw curved lines across the interiors of the patterns to give them the texture of crashing ocean waves. Draw teardrop-shaped water droplets falling from the crests of the waves.
